LITTLETHORPE WI    LATEST NEWS

Spring had certainly arrived when our speaker Mrs Angela Henson gave us a wonderful talk illustrated with slides of the Wild Flowers of the Yorkshire Dales and began with a wintry scene showing a clump of trees silhouetted against a leaden sky. Arctic plants such as the Blackberry Family and Cloudberry have survived, due to the wintry weather and high rainfall.

Yorkshire marks the boundaries for plants suited to the north as well as those in the south, resulting in an abundance of varieties. The limestone and sandstone of the craven fault suitable for the Early purple saxifrage ,and  Parasitic Toothwort We were reminded of the many native plants such as Bird Cherry, Hawthorn Juniper used mainly in hedges for stock fencing  Hay meadows of Buttercups, Yellow Rattle, Clover, Harebells, Speedwell and many more now beginning to return in some upland parts. In Arkengarthdale the Spring Sandwort has a taste for lead rich soils and is frequently found in old lead mine spoil tips and once used by miners to find lead. A vote of thanks was given by Kath Ching.

Business included an appeal for unused knitting needles for teaching children. An outing to Burghley House, Lincolnshire on Wed. 30th July is being organised . Discussion followed on the raising of money to help furnish a bedroom adopted by North Yorkshire West Federation at the National Federation Denman College., in Oxfordshire.

We had hoped to have members from other Institutes to our March meeting but the date had clashed with a “Wartime Wedding “ experience at Kettlesing Village Hall. However three members from Roecliffe WI joined us to hear a very interesting and enjoyable talk entitled “The Donkey Sanctuary- Working for Wonder Women” by Bill Tetlow.   Some thirty years ago Bill and his wife first purchased a baby donkey foal and immediately fell in love with them. He is now Chief Welfare Officer for the Donkey Sanctuary founded in 1969 by Dr Elizabeth D Svendsen MBE. (his Wonderwoman, )where over 10,000 donkeys have been taken into care. Bill travels all over the British Isles and abroad to promote the correct treatment of donkeys. The main headquarters and intake centre at Sidmouth, Devon is open to the public every day of the year.

A vote of thanks was given by Georgina who as a child had a donkey as a family pet.

Supper was served and then to the business part of the meeting, which included a report on the Group Bulb and Flower Show held in Sawley  Village Hall. . Joan Harker  and Georgina Bulman had done well in the Bulb and Floral Arrangement Sections. Joan winning the trophy for gaining most points in the Bulb Section. Three members are to attend the Federation Council Meeting in Skipton at the end of April. Cleaning materials were collected for the Harrogate Women’s Refuge Appeal.

Next meeting, Tuesday 1st April 7.30 in the VH when Mrs Angela Henson’s subject will be, “Wild Flowers of the Yorkshire Dales.” Visitors will be most welcome.
